Welcome 2014

“Each New Year, we have before us a brand new book containing 365 blank pages. Let us fill them with all the forgotten things from last year—the words we forgot to say, the love we forgot to show, and the charity we forgot to offer.” ― Peggy Toney Horton

Morning has broken

“A pessimist sees only the dark side of the clouds, and mopes; a philosopher sees both sides, and shrugs; an optimist doesn’t see the clouds at all – he’s walking on them.” ~ Leonard Louis Levinson Morning Has Broken © Jojie Alcantara 2010 Took images of a glorious sunrise overlooking Davao and Samal Island at 5am from a high elevation in Mountain Haven, right after day one of our workshop back in June 2010. The weather was perfect, the sky marked with attractive cloud patterns in soft orange hues. This photo was taken straight from the cam, and only resized and watermarked. I used a Canon 7D.

Be curious

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down to your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.” ~ Professor Stephen Hawking on his 70th birthday. BE CURIOUS. There is always something you can do and succeed at.  I can never emphasize that enough. This wonderful scene was captured early morning at sunrise in Bango Beach of Caraga, Davao Oriental.  This is one of the few beaches with accommodation in the remote municipality.  Turns out that the owner of this place happens to be a relative of mine (his family name is my middle name and we traced it to my grandfather’s line) and I happened to have plenty of distant relatives in this town. Sunrise here is spectacular as well.  Isn’t it great to live in a province?

You are you-nique

“Did you know that you have big things to accomplish in life? And did you know that those big things are getting rather dusty while you pour yourself another cup of coffee, and decide to mull things over rather than do them? We were all born with a gift to give in life, one which informs all of our desires, interests, passions and curiosities. This gift is, in fact, our purpose. And you don’t need permission to decide your own purpose. No boss, teacher, parent, priest or other authority can decide this for you. Just find that unique purpose.” ~ Steve Jobs * * * * (Excerpt) 25 Years Ago Today, Steve Jobs Bought Pixar On February 3rd, 1986 Steve Jobs acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm. Jobs, who was forced to resign from Apple, renamed the group “Pixar”. After some years of initial business struggle, the rest is history: Pixar is now the most successful animation studio in the world with masterpieces such as Toy Story, Up and Wall-E in their portfolio. Punta Dumalag at sunrise by Jojie Alcantara

Imagine, create, deliver

At age 2, I was scribbling on walls, on my Dad’s books, writing or sketching on any paper I can get hold of. I started doodling, creating storybook sketches conjured from an imaginative young mind. I would draw, color, paint. I lived a life of curiosity, reading books at night while my parents propped me up on a stack of pillows during asthma attacks.

Dream and believe

“We all have our own life to pursue, our own kind of dream to be weaving. And we all have some power to make wishes come true, as long as we keep believing”. ~ Louisa May Alcott My sunrise shoot in Punta Dumalag, Davao City Special thanks to Anne for this pose under the heat of the sun. Shots were taken with an Olympus Pen EPL-3, using built-in art filter, no post processing adjustments

Celebrate the simple life

“Each day, awakening, are we asked to paint the sky blue? Need we coax the sun to rise or flowers to bloom? Need we teach birds to sing, or children to laugh, or lovers to kiss? No, though we think the world imperfect, it surrounds us each day with its perfections. We are asked only to appreciate them, and to show appreciation by living in peaceful harmony amidst them. The Creator does not ask that we create a perfect world; He asks that we celebrate it.” ~Robert Brault Punta Dumalag’s Turtle Sanctuary, Davao City Photography, Jojie Alcantara

A Tall Order

MAJESTIC TOOG: PHILIPPINE’S TALLEST LIVING CHRISTMAS TREE For Gil Andipa, a Manobo native who works for the Department of Natural Resources (DENR), climbing trees was a part of his life since childhood. He possesses skills that allow him to scale trees and work on grafting and collecting samples. But he has injured a rib or two from falls when he was younger. On Sept. 28 of this year, he got involved in a project which was enthusiastically started by the citizens of Alegria, a small barangay in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur. He was paid to scale the tallest tree in town to install Christmas lights, twice, because no one would dare. Not only was it a tall order, pardon the pun, but a huge amount of electric lights must be acquired to illuminate a living Christmas tree at night. Read my full story here
