His catch, my catch

“To improve the golden moment of opportunity, and catch the good that is within our reach, is the great art of life.” ~ Samuel Johnson

This was captured on a beach in my birthplace of Mati, Davao Oriental.  I was aiming for a “perfect shot” of this fisherman who was about to throw a net in the air.  When he did, his companion passed by suddenly, as if to tell him, the day’s over, let’s go home.

It ruined my imagined composition.

Later, as I kept looking at it, I thought, what does a ‘perfect shot’ really mean?  Maybe there’s more character and life to my imperfect shot than the vision I had created in my mind.  Maybe we should be looking for contentment in our flawed reality.

My catch is probably just as good as his.
